 StandUp4Katalina

One week ago, a friend posted her story** on her Facebook wall. Devastated by this news from a deeply-valued reader/supporter/friend, I asked the question so many others have asked: “What can we do for you, K?” Her answer: “I want for nothing for myself. Do you think we could raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer?” Thus, Stand Up 4 Katalina (SU4K) was born.

All too often, we are asked to contribute in memory of a friend, such as the tragedy that struck our fandom friend Gisela (Mad4hugh) at Comic Con earlier this year. This time, Katalina is here, in our midst, and because of that, this project is unique.

We’ve dedicated this compilation to Katalina and made this an “All Request Compilation”: each author who signs up will be fulfilling a wish for Katalina—whether an outtake, a new one-shot, or the beginning of a new story.

Each entry will be personally meaningful to Katalina. Let’s pull together and surround her in the cocoon of our love and our support, all the best this fandom has to offer.

Each of us has been touched and devastated by the ravages of cancer, and in order to recognize this, we’re offering the opportunity to dedicate the monetary donations in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one’s battle. “Stand Up 2 Cancer’s mission is to fund collaborative, translational cancer research to bring treatments from the bench to the bedside faster, and save lives now.” So while SU4K is intensely personal, it also offers the vehicle for universal, broad-based support.

We hope you will join us in supporting Katalina and cancer research, whether by contributing a story, your beta or banner skills, and a financial contribution to the cause.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We … @TwistedLea, @ThatsSoAlex, and @idealskeptic … would love it if you would consider helping us try to raise money for these very worthy charities, however you can (by donation or writing or even just spreading the word), because we believe that it is incredibly important to remember that it isn't only other human beings that can use our help in this world.

And the reason that the animals of the world need help is, unfortunately, very often because of what we humans have done to their homes.

That’s why we’re writing Stories For Animals.

In two months we are going to put a compilation together from authors throughout all genres. You can sign up to donate a one shot, chapter, poem, or a continuation/outtake from a story. There will be a form you can fill out available to you as well.

With your help we can donate to an amazing and beautiful charity, To Write Love on her Arms. With a minimum donation of $5 you can have access to the compilation which will be made available September 13.

And with that comes our joy for reading and our want for improving. Where would we be today without the education we received as a child? It’s a tough time right now, and we’re here hoping to help a classroom suffer just a little bit less.

Fandom For Ovarian Cancer

A fandom fundraiser in honor and support of Mina Rivera

Compilations to benefit different charities and causes are certainly nothing new, and each one has touched many lives. What is perhaps different about this particular compilation is that it benefits one of our own, rather than a larger group. There are excellent reasons for dedicating the efforts of multiple writers, banner designers, beta readers, and others to benefit one individual – each one of those reasons has to do with the extraordinary person that is Mina Rivera.

5/31/2012

6/1/2012

Those of us who have been touched by Mina’s kindness, her tirelessly giving nature, her boundless support, and her unflagging enthusiasm know that she is a truly special person, not only just in the world of fan fiction, but as a human being. She has seen so much adversity and has had so many obstacles to overcome, and yet she has always treated the people around her with love, compassion, and cheerfulness. Even in the darkest days when she has been unable to hide her fears, her greatest concern was always for the people who love her. Many of us who have been blessed with Mina’s friendship have grown particularly fond of her mother, who has been such a strong example and loving force in her life, and we can appreciate the bond that this family shares. It is a blessing that Mina is surrounded with such love as she fights her cancer, but it is also heartbreaking to know how she and her family are suffering while they face the grim realities that come with the disease.

I have gotten to know Mina through a writing group known as the SotTP, and I can attest to her kind heart and patient acceptance. She always has a kind word for each of us, even when we are having a bad day and probably deserve a smack upside the head instead. Her talents are considerable as well, and I can only guess at how much greater they will become if she is able to continue to work and let her skills grow and flourish. I have always enjoyed her writing, and each of her banners is a little work of art. Her attention to detail and her calm approach have helped her to produce wonderful things, and she has always shared her talents with the rest of the fandom without ever expecting anything in return.

It is a rare thing to meet a genuinely kind, tolerant, and positive person. Mina has touched so many lives in such wonderful ways, and I can only pray that she is able to continue to make the world a better place. The world desperately needs people like her, who are unafraid to speak up for what is good and right, and who can speak out with a kind, loving voice of reason. In supporting this compilation, you are helping to ensure that her bright light does not go out.

Mina is a special friend who is always there when we need a shoulder to cry on, someone to make us a banner, or just to kick us in the butt and tell us to get back to work.

Mina is asking that the focus be on fighting ovarian cancer.

This is an ugly disease and awareness is desperately needed.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.

It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways. Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support. People with autism may also experience over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light or colours.

In the 1960s, Eunice Kennedy Shriver began a day camp for people with developmental disabilities. Camp took place in Eunice's back yard during the summer, and in 1968 turned into what has come to be known as the Special Olympics.

The first Special Olympics games took place in the summer of 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL. Swimming and track and field were the first two sports that participants competed in, and that summer over 1,000 people from both the US and Canada competed in the events.

As time progressed, the Special Olympics began to grow. In 1977, the first Special Olympics games to take place in the winter were held in Steamboat Springs, CO. In 1987, a holiday rock and roll CD was released, with all the profits going toward supporting the Special Olympics. In 1988, individual Special Olympics sports teams started to emerge in addition to the quadrennial world games. By 2006, more than 2.5 million individuals were participating in Special Olympics activities worldwide.

The Special Olympics is continuously growing and expanding. New members, donors, and volunteers are joining the organization daily, and new programs are continuously evaluated and implemented.

Los Angeles, CA will host the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games. This will be the first time in 16 years that the World Summer Games have taken place on US turf!

For more information on the Special Olympics and how you can get involved visit www.specialolympics.org.

Help Put An End To Child Abuse

4/15/2012

It's no secret that there are children all over the word who are suffering from abuse and neglect. Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. In 2009, approximately 3.3 million child abuse reports and allegations were made involving an estimated 6 million children. There were more than 46,000 confirmed cases of child abuse in Australia last year. That's almost 1 case every 10 minutes where a child is suffering from neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse (often by people they know and should be able to trust). Many of these kids get no professional help whatsoever, and end up with lifelong problems.

In the United Kingdom, research indicates that abuse and neglect are both under-reported and under-recorded. According to their most recent statistics (March 2011), there are approximately 46, 700 children who are known to be at risk of abuse right now, and one in four young adults were maltreated during childhood. In an effort to help put an end to child abuse, Fandom 4 Children has been organized. We are hoping that members of all fandoms from all across the globe will be willing to reach out and contribute in some small way through donations to charities or by contributing to the compilation we are organizing.

Why Are We Raising Funds?

In September, six-year-old Aloshua went into respiratory distress and was rushed to Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. While there, his family found out that Aloshua has pseudomonas aeruginosa in his lungs. Pseudomonas is a common bacteria found in a variety of environments that can cause serious disease in humans and animals alike. For severely ill children like Aloshua, the disease can be fatal if not properly treated.

The only approved treatment for pseudomonas like this is an inhalation antibiotic that must be given in continual 28-day cycles. That is to say, Aloshua takes the antibiotic for 28-days, then stops for 28-days, and then begins another 28-day cycle. Aloshua may very well be on the antibiotic for years. As if that weren't bad enough, because the antibiotic is so expensive, his insurance only covers it for patients with cystic fibrosis, leaving his mom facing a $4,500.00 bill for one medication every other month.

Fandom Against Juvenile Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is required by the body to use glucose, the simple sugar that most foods are broken down into by our digestive system. Without insulin, the body starves to death.

For a long time now I've looked at the various fundraisers going on in the fandoms and thought that, as fantastic as they all are, that it would be great to support a UK based cause. With this in mind, we have chosen to support our servicemen and women by supporting Help for Heroes and The Poppy Appeal.

It's been over a year since this idea first emerged; twelve months in which our lives took over and this project took a back seat for a while, but also twelve months in which, as of 10th November, 2011, another 44 British soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan, and, as of 15th October, 2011, 288 more were admitted to field hospitals after being wounded in action.

This is open to all fandoms, as well as original pieces of fiction. Please, please help us to spread the word about what we are doing. You can find us on Twitter here: @fandom4heroes

Thank you for all of your support.

Welcome to The Fandom Gives Back, a Fandom-wide initiative, created to unite the fans of the Twilight Saga and raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand. ALSF is a children's cancer research foundation, borne from the vision of Alex Scott (1996-2004).

DONATIONS: We have a small goal this year. Just $15k for ALSF. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see us go beyond that as in other years but without an auction, it will be difficult.

When we reach it, the Twilight fandom will have reached a magnificent milestone. $250,000 will have been raised for children's cancer research. The most impressive thing? It will have been done in only 21 days.

Yes, it's been 3 years, but the total time that FGB has actively run will only have been 21 days! 1 week in 09', 1 week in 10' and 1 week in 11'. That's impressive and the fandom should be proud.

Breaking Dawn is the last movie. It would be great to go out with a bang :)

Christmas Wishes was formed out of the Twigasm admins’ love of children and the Spirit of Christmas. As parents ourselves, we believe every child should be able to look forward to a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Morning. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots program has fostered that ideal for over 60 years. In a time of a shaky economy, when so many parents are unemployed, the need for donations has never been greater. We consider it an honor to support this worthy cause. It is our goal to show that fanfiction is so much more than great stories. It is about amazing people with a huge capacity to give from their hearts.

Fandom for Texas Wildfire Relief

11/01/2011

11/01/2011

approx 11/07/2011

Over Labor Day weekend, wildfires erupted across the state of Texas, destroying nearly 2000 homes and obliterating over 100,000 acres of land. My own family lost 2 homes, and laurnorder's home survived the fire, but the flames were so close that the fence is gone and the yard is burned. Half of the community where I grew up is blackened land and ash. So many people, including several in our fandom, are in hotels and shelters, waiting to find out if they have homes to return to. This is the scene from Austin just a few days ago: http://texasfires.ysar.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/austin-fire.jpg. The devastation stretches across the state, and the fires are still burning.

We're putting together a compilation of stories (any fandom or original) to be distributed to anyone who donates at least $5 to an agency helping the thousands who've been displaced, the volunteer fire departments who are still fighting to save communities even as their own homes are lost, and the many organizations who have taken in animals evacuated from and injured in the fires.
This is my home and my people. It's where a community of ranchers and housewives stepped in to help raise me when my mother left, where I knew by someone's wave whether they were a neighbor or a stranger, where cities of skyscrapers are surrounded by ranches and farms, and where the woods were always home. So much of it is being destroyed, and with the support of so many Texans in our fandom, I'm asking everyone I know to give a story or a donation to help the many who now must rebuild from ashes.

Why Fandom4Causes?

Fandom4Causes was founded to share information and links for ALL of the causes going on in the Twilight Fandom. With all the causes in the Twilight Fandom we wanted a place that was easy to navigate and would share all the information, not only about the causes but the resources as well. Our goal is to make sure that we can get the important information about so many worthy causes into the hands of as many people as possible.

By having all of the information in one place, it allows those interested to find all of the resources they may need in one convenient place for easy organization.

We're here to #SpreadtheWord and help out any way we're needed. Our features include daily tweets about all the causes, links and information to banners4causes and Tips & Tricks to running a cause in the Twilight Fandom.
